placebo

Any medical treatment that is known to have no effect, such as a sugar pill. In clinical trials, placebos are given to control groups to compare the results of people who receive the placebo with the results of those who receive the experimental drug. The experimental treatment must produce better results than the placebo in order to be considered effective.
